What Are the Best Ways to Study the Bible?

Book

The Bible was written long ago in a different language. It has been translated into many different languages, and we are lucky enough to be able to read it in our language today. However, because it was translated from different languages so long ago, there can be things such as cultural nuances and symbolism that an individual from today’s world may not comprehend. The Bible is also written in a way that we no longer speak. So, it’s no wonder that it can be tricky to understand and takes much concentration when studying it. Sometimes, you might need a bit of help. Here are a few ideas to help you get more out of your Bible study.

1. Study With Friends and Family
Consider setting up a group of people that you can talk to about your Bible study. Discuss what sections of the Bible you’d like to study and go from there. Set up a time every week to meet with family or friends (virtually or in-person), and stick to it. Then get together and discuss what you’ve read. Add in some yummy snacks and drinks for more fun.

The insights that your family members and friends have could be totally different than your own insights. So, by sharing what they think and you sharing what you think, you might come up with even more great insights. If you have family or friends that are experts on the scriptures, a professor of religion, or a former seminary teacher, you might get some historical insights, from them, about the Bible, that you’ve never known. Don’t underestimate studying with a group after you’ve done your personal study!

2. By Listening to Podcasts
Have you tried listening to scripture-center podcasts? If not, you’re seriously missing out! To start out, try ones like Don’t Miss This or the Real Talk LDS podcast. There are many podcasts that go along with the Come Follow Me curriculum too. So, if you need extra supplemental help with your home-centered learning, a podcast might be just what you need!

3. Taking Time Every Day to Study
Consistency and a schedule are things that we as humans love. It’s ingrained in us from an early age, and it’s something that helps us be successful throughout life. Sometimes however, we forget this. So, when you want to get more out of something, such as Bible study, you need to hold yourself to a schedule. Set aside time every day (preferably at the same time every day), to do your study. If you can set a study schedule for yourself and hold to it, that will work even more! So, set a time to study every day, stick to it, and see how much this consistency will help.

4. Prepare for Study
If you’re not spiritually ready to do your Bible study, you’ll get so much less out of it. So, if you can, take maybe 5-10 minutes to prepare before you study. Keep all of your study items in one place in an organized way (such as inside a plastic tote.) So, you’ll be able to easily find everything. Then, start your study with prayer and listen to some uplifting music. Getting yourself into the right mindset to receive personal revelation is almost as important as the study itself.

Hopefully these ways to study the Bible will help you get to even better spiritual insights!
