3 technologies making our world better

Our lives are connected with digital technology. We always use the Internet to find out the news or the weather forecast, we pay with bank cards through POS terminals working through the web, we watch our favorite TV shows in the evenings, and chat with friends on messengers and social networks. But all these achievements have become widespread not so long ago. We will tell you about the digital technologies indispensable in a modern person’s life.

Internet

You are probably used to the freedom the Internet gives you. You are used to getting any information you want, visiting any sites, and chatting with any people. If the government blocks it, you can always use the japanese proxy service (if you buy it on soax.com, you can save a lot of money). However, the Internet is a relatively new technology.

The first computer network appeared in 1969. It united 4 computers located at universities in the USA. All work was classified and financed by the Ministry of Defense, as it was assumed that the network called ARPANet would be used for communication between the military research institutions. The World Wide Web became publicly available to any user in 1991. By that time many things familiar to modern users had already been developed, such as e-mail and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for providing real-time communication.

Personal computer

Today, almost everyone has a PC or a laptop but such technology wasn’t available for ordinary users in the past. It was impossible to disseminate it because of:

  • the need for a huge amount of knowledge;
  • high cost;
  • lack of need for such a device.

During the ’70s many models of computers appeared. They were aimed at enthusiasts and were still difficult to master. Despite the success of the Apple II, the first mass-produced computer for a wide range, the IBM PC, developed in 1981, was truly mass-produced. It also contributed to the success of Microsoft — the IBM PC came with the DOS operating system. The subsequent development of personal computers led to a decrease in their cost and their widespread use not only for educational and business purposes, but also for entertainment.

Wi-Fi

The name of this technology is derived from the Wireless Fidelity acronym. Its history began in 1985, when the U. S. Federal Communications Agency granted the possibility to use certain frequencies of the radio spectrum without licensing. The first technology that worked like modern Wi-Fi was the development of NCR Corporation and AT&T, the Dutch companies. They invented a solution to optimize the cash register systems called WaveLAN.

The development of wireless technologies led to their implementation in household appliances and the spread of the concept of the Internet of Things. It involves the joint work of all the smart appliances in the house and providing a large number of people with Internet access in various public places, such as exhibitions, airports, train stations, etc.
